Beyond the Backlog: Are We Evolving from Product Managers to Product Coaches in the Age of AI?

There’s a lot of talk about AI making product managers obsolete. I think that’s the wrong way to look at it. Instead of replacement, we should be thinking about evolution. As AI tools get better at synthesizing user feedback, analyzing market data, and even drafting initial user stories, the tactical parts of our job are shrinking.

This doesn’t make us less valuable; it shifts our value proposition. We’re moving from being ‘managers’ of a backlog to ‘coaches’ of a product-led team. Our core responsibilities are becoming less about owning all the answers and more about asking the right questions. The real work is now in fostering deep customer empathy, navigating complex stakeholder dynamics, and coaching our teams to connect the dots between data-driven insights and a compelling product vision. AI can give us the ‘what,’ but it can’t provide the ‘why’ with true human context.

This shift elevates the role from tactical execution to strategic leadership. We’re freed up to focus on the uniquely human aspects of product development that machines can’t replicate.

So, how are you adapting to this change? What’s one task you’ve started offloading to AI to make more room for strategic coaching?
