The air in product management is thick with talk of AI, and for good reason. From automating code generation to supercharging user research synthesis, the promise of AI tools for accelerating product development velocity is undeniable. Many teams are already seeing gains, streamlining tedious tasks and freeing up engineers and designers to focus on higher-order problems. It feels like we’re on the cusp of a new era where “doing more with less” isn’t just a mantra, but a tangible reality powered by intelligent algorithms.
However, as product leaders, we need to ask ourselves a crucial question: is this acceleration always translating into better products and stronger product-market fit? The danger lies in mistaking speed for progress. Rapidly generated code or analysis, if not guided by deep strategic thinking and genuine user empathy, can easily lead to feature bloat, technical debt, or products that simply miss the mark. Our role isn’t just to ship faster, but to ship the right things faster. This means PMs must evolve, learning how to effectively leverage AI as a co-pilot, not a replacement for critical thinking, strategic planning, and rigorous validation.
The real challenge isn’t just adopting AI tools, but integrating them into a workflow that enhances our ability to solve real user problems and achieve business outcomes, rather than just producing more output.
How are you ensuring AI-driven velocity translates into genuine product value, not just increased activity?
