It’s impossible to ignore the explosion of AI tools in our product management workflows. From summarizing user interview transcripts in seconds to drafting initial PRDs, AI is clearly a massive productivity booster. This gives rise to the ‘AI-Augmented PM’—a product leader who is faster, more data-informed, and freed up from repetitive tasks to focus on high-level strategy and vision.
But there’s a flip side to this coin. As we increasingly outsource tasks like user story creation or feedback synthesis to algorithms, are we risking the atrophy of our core skills? Great product management has always been about deep user empathy and nuanced problem-solving—the kind of intuition built from wrestling with raw, messy customer data. When we let AI handle the synthesis, we risk creating a dangerous layer of abstraction between us and the very people we’re supposed to serve.
The challenge for modern PMs is finding the right balance. We need to embrace AI as a powerful co-pilot without letting it take over the controls of our critical thinking and user connection.
Where do you draw the line? How are you using AI to augment your skills without automating your empathy and intuition?
