Shipping Fast vs. Building Right: A PM's Dilemma

In today’s rapidly evolving tech landscape, the mantra of “move fast and break things” often feels more relevant than ever. With new technologies emerging almost daily and market expectations constantly shifting, product teams are under immense pressure to ship features and products at breakneck speed. While agility and quick iteration are undeniably valuable, this relentless pursuit of speed can inadvertently lead us astray.

The core dilemma for product managers lies in balancing this need for rapid delivery with the critical importance of deep user understanding and thorough discovery. Rushing through the research phase or making assumptions about user needs in the name of speed often results in building the wrong features, solving irrelevant problems, or creating products that miss the mark on product-market fit. This isn’t just inefficient; it’s a drain on resources and a potential blow to user trust.

As PMs, we are the advocates for the user and the guardians of product value. Our role isn’t just to facilitate shipping; it’s to ensure we’re shipping the right things. This means pushing back constructively, championing adequate time for user research, prototyping, and validation, even when the clock is ticking loudly. It’s about being strategic in our agile approach, ensuring that speed serves purpose, not the other way around.

How do you balance the pressure to ship quickly with the need for thorough user research and validation in your teams?
