User Research: Speed vs. Depth in Agile AI

In our quest for rapid iteration and leveraging new technologies like AI, are we sometimes sacrificing the foundational understanding of our users? It’s a tension many product managers face daily: the pressure to ship quickly, adapt to new tech, and the undeniable need for deep, insightful user research.

While agile methodologies champion continuous feedback and iterative development, there’s a risk of mistaking a quick usability test for comprehensive discovery. Especially as AI capabilities evolve, the temptation to build “cool tech” often overshadows a clear problem-solution fit derived from genuine user pain points. True product-market fit isn’t found by simply iterating faster; it’s built on a profound empathy for the user and a clear understanding of their unmet needs.

The challenge for us as PMs, founders, and tech leads is to integrate meaningful user research into our agile sprints without becoming bottlenecks. It’s about finding the sweet spot where speed meets substance, ensuring our innovations genuinely solve problems, rather than just adding features. Neglecting this balance can lead to wasted resources, products nobody truly needs, and ultimately, a failure to achieve sustainable growth.

How do you balance the demands for rapid delivery with the critical need for deep user understanding in your current projects, especially with emerging technologies?
