Your Most Important Product Might Be Internal

Hey everyone,

The term ‘platform engineering’ is gaining serious momentum, and it’s something we as product leaders can’t afford to ignore. It’s more than just a new buzzword from our engineering counterparts; it’s a fundamental shift in how high-performing teams enable speed and quality.

The core idea is to build an Internal Developer Platform (IDP) — a set of self-service tools and workflows that pave the road for developers to ship code efficiently and reliably. The real insight here is to stop treating this as a side project or a cost center. We should treat the IDP as a product in its own right, with developers as our customers.

By applying product management principles—user research with devs, clear roadmapping, and success metrics—we can solve major bottlenecks. A well-managed IDP directly accelerates our ability to deliver value to external customers. Think faster release cycles, more consistent user experiences, and more time for engineers to innovate on features instead of fighting infrastructure. At Leera.io, we see firsthand how streamlined internal tools can drastically improve team velocity and focus.

So, my question for the community is: How involved are you with your internal developer platform, and do you think PMs should take a more active role in shaping these ‘products for developers?’
