AI: A Feature, Not *Always* a Product

The AI boom is undeniable, and every product team is grappling with how to leverage it. We’re seeing a flood of new tools and features boasting “AI-powered” capabilities. But here’s a crucial distinction many are overlooking: is AI the product, or is it a powerful feature within your existing offering?

Often, product teams jump to build entirely new AI-centric products, only to find themselves struggling with product-market fit. The real magic, in many cases, lies in integrating AI as an enhancement – a smart feature that solves a specific user problem more efficiently or effectively within an established product. Think of it as a supercharger, not necessarily a brand-new engine.

Misunderstanding this difference can lead to wasted resources, feature creep, and a diluted value proposition. As product managers, our role is to deeply understand user pain points and strategically identify where AI can genuinely augment existing workflows or unlock entirely new value, rather than just chasing the hype. We must ask: What problem are we actually solving, and is AI the best, most elegant solution, or just a shiny object?
