AI in Product: Beyond the Hype

The buzz around AI is deafening, and every product team seems to be scrambling to “add AI” to their offerings. But as product managers, our role isn’t just to chase trends; it’s to build genuine value for our users. So, how do we move beyond the superficial hype and integrate AI in a way that truly serves our customers and strengthens our product-market fit?

It starts with user research, not technology. Instead of asking “How can we use AI?”, we should be asking “What user problems can AI uniquely solve?” This requires deep dives into user pain points, workflows, and unmet needs. Once we identify genuine opportunities, our roadmapping process needs to adapt. AI features often come with higher complexity and different risk profiles. We must articulate clear hypotheses for how AI will improve user experience or business outcomes, treating AI capabilities as potential solutions to validate, not just features to ship.

Effective AI integration demands tighter cross-functional collaboration than ever. Product, engineering, data science, and UX must work hand-in-hand from ideation through iteration. This ensures technical feasibility aligns with user desirability and business viability. We’re not just building features; we’re building intelligence that needs continuous learning and refinement.
