AI Integration: User Focus or Feature Creep?

The AI boom is undeniable, and as product managers, we’re all feeling the immense pressure to integrate artificial intelligence into our products. It’s a double-edged sword: on one hand, AI offers incredible potential to enhance user experiences, automate tasks, and unlock new value. On the other, there’s a real danger of succumbing to ‘AI for AI’s sake’ – bolting on features just because they’re trendy, without truly solving a user problem or deepening product-market fit.

This is where our core PM principles become more critical than ever. Before diving headfirst into the latest LLM API, we need to ask: What user problem are we solving? How does this AI feature align with our product strategy? Is it genuinely enhancing our value proposition, or is it merely adding complexity? Roadmaps need to reflect a deliberate, user-centric approach to AI, grounded in thorough user research and validation, not just technological hype. Our agile sprints should be focused on delivering measurable user value, whether that value is AI-powered or not.

The real challenge isn’t just implementing AI, but strategically embedding it in a way that amplifies our core offering and delivers undeniable value. We risk distracting our teams and confusing our users if we chase every shiny object without a clear ‘why.’

How are you navigating the push for AI integration while ensuring your product remains deeply focused on core user problems and maintaining strong product-market fit?
