AI on the Roadmap: Innovation vs. User Value

The surge of AI in product development has many of us grappling with how to effectively integrate these powerful capabilities into our roadmaps. It’s an exciting time, with immense potential to redefine user experiences and create entirely new product categories.

However, there’s a subtle trap we need to be wary of: feature-creeping with AI just for the sake of having “AI.” The real challenge isn’t merely implementing AI, but strategically identifying where AI genuinely adds user value, solves a critical problem, or unlocks a previously impossible experience. Without a robust user research foundation, we risk building impressive tech that misses the mark on user needs and product-market fit.

This demands a renewed focus on our core PM principles: deep user understanding, rigorous validation, and an agile approach that allows for rapid learning and iteration, especially as AI models evolve. Our roadmaps must reflect this balance, ensuring that every AI initiative is tied to clear user outcomes and business value, rather than simply chasing the latest technological trend. It’s about being intentional, not just reactive.

How are you balancing AI innovation with user-centric design in your product roadmaps? What frameworks or practices have you found most effective?
