AI & PMs: New Skills, New Horizons?

The AI revolution is here, and it’s reshaping every corner of software development, including product management. We’re moving beyond AI as just a feature, seeing it become an integral part of our workflow, influencing everything from ideation to delivery.

For product managers, this isn’t just about understanding how to build AI into products; it’s about reimagining our own processes. Think about user research: AI tools can now synthesize vast amounts of qualitative data, identify patterns, and even generate preliminary insights faster than ever. On the development side, AI-assisted tools are accelerating coding and testing. Strategically, AI offers powerful capabilities for market analysis and predictive modeling, pushing us toward truly data-driven decisions at an unprecedented pace.

The critical question for us becomes: How do we evolve from just “using” AI to becoming “AI-powered” PMs? It demands a new blend of skills – a deeper understanding of AI’s capabilities and limitations, prompt engineering for research and ideation, and perhaps most importantly, a renewed focus on the uniquely human aspects of product work: empathy, strategic vision, and complex problem-solving. This shift frees us from mundane tasks, allowing us to focus more on vision, user understanding, and cross-functional leadership.

What new skills do you believe are becoming non-negotiable for product managers navigating this AI-driven landscape?
