AI & Product: Reshaping Roadmaps and Research?

The AI revolution isn’t just about building AI products; it’s fundamentally reshaping how we build products. For product managers, this means a significant shift in both roadmapping and user research.

In roadmapping, AI offers unprecedented capabilities. Imagine AI models sifting through market data, competitive landscapes, and even internal product usage to surface unexpected opportunities or predict the impact of potential features. This moves us beyond gut feelings or purely reactive planning towards more data-informed and predictive roadmaps. It’s not about AI replacing strategic thinking, but augmenting it, allowing PMs to focus on higher-level vision and complex problem-solving.

User research is equally transformed. AI can rapidly synthesize vast amounts of qualitative feedback, identifying patterns, sentiment, and unmet needs that would take human researchers weeks. Think about automatically clustering customer support tickets, analyzing survey open-ends, or even identifying behavioral anomalies in user sessions. This frees up researchers and PMs to delve deeper into why users behave a certain way, cultivate empathy, and design truly impactful solutions, rather than drowning in data processing.

The challenge, of course, is integrating these tools effectively and ethically. It requires a new level of data literacy and a keen understanding of AI’s biases and limitations. But for PMs, embracing AI means not just staying relevant, but truly innovating in how we understand our users and shape our product futures.
