The buzz around AI in product development is undeniable. Every team is exploring how to integrate generative AI, machine learning, and automation into their offerings. But amidst the excitement, I’m seeing a crucial challenge emerge for product managers: how do we ensure these AI-driven features truly serve user needs rather than just showcasing technological prowess?
It’s easy to fall into the trap of building “cool tech” because it’s possible, without adequately validating if it solves a genuine user problem or enhances an existing workflow. The risk is creating complex, resource-intensive features that users don’t adopt, leading to wasted effort and diluted product value. Our role as PMs is more critical than ever to bridge the gap between AI capabilities and tangible user benefits.
This means doubling down on user research before jumping to solutions. What real pain points can AI uniquely address? How will users interact with AI? How do we measure success beyond technical performance – focusing on user adoption, satisfaction, and problem-solving? It’s about being intentional, not just opportunistic.
How are you and your teams navigating the balance between leveraging cutting-edge AI and maintaining a rigorously user-centric approach?
