AI's Impact: New Skills for Product Managers

The rapid proliferation of AI, from sophisticated LLMs to predictive analytics tools, is fundamentally reshaping how we build and manage products. It’s no longer enough to just “add AI” as a feature; AI is becoming an integral layer in our development stacks and user experiences. This shift demands a critical re-evaluation of the product manager’s toolkit and responsibilities.

We’re moving beyond merely understanding technology to truly understanding intelligent technology. PMs now need to grasp the basics of machine learning lifecycles, the nuances of prompt engineering, and the ethical implications of AI deployment. This isn’t about becoming data scientists, but about being fluent enough to strategize effectively, ask the right questions, and guide development teams working with these powerful new capabilities. Roadmapping now involves assessing AI model performance, identifying bias, and designing user experiences that build trust in AI-powered features. Our user research must evolve to understand how users interact with increasingly autonomous systems and manage their expectations. Cross-functional collaboration now explicitly includes working hand-in-hand with AI/ML engineers and data ethicists.

Ignoring this evolution risks falling behind. Product-market fit in an AI-driven world will increasingly depend on how deftly products leverage AI to solve real user problems, not just as a gimmick.

How are you adapting your PM toolkit and team strategies for the AI era?
