The rapid advancement of AI, particularly Generative AI, is fundamentally reshaping how we build products and, consequently, the core competencies required of product managers. It’s no longer enough to understand basic data analytics or user flows; PMs now need to grapple with concepts like prompt engineering, AI ethics, model explainability, and the unique user experience challenges AI-driven features present.
This isn’t just about adding “AI features” to a roadmap. It’s about rethinking problem spaces, user interaction paradigms, and even our agile processes. How do you sprint on an outcome when the underlying AI model might deliver unexpected results? How do you conduct user research when the “product” can dynamically generate responses or content? PMs must become fluent in the language of AI, not to code it, but to strategically guide its application, ensure responsible innovation, and articulate its value to users and stakeholders. Ignoring this shift isn’t an option; embracing it is key to building the next generation of successful products.
How are you personally adapting your PM toolkit to navigate the AI revolution, and what new skills do you believe are non-negotiable for PMs today?
