There’s a ton of talk about building AI into our products, but let’s discuss a trend that’s closer to home: how AI is changing the very craft of being a Product Manager. From drafting user stories with ChatGPT to summarizing user interview transcripts or generating a first-pass competitive analysis, AI tools are increasingly handling the ‘first draft’ of our work.
This marks a fundamental shift in our role. Where we once spent hours on the tactical grind of creation, our primary function is becoming one of curation, refinement, and strategic direction. The core skill is no longer just about writing a clear PRD from scratch; it’s about crafting the perfect prompt to guide the AI and then critically editing its output to ensure it aligns with user needs and business goals.
This evolution frees us from mundane tasks, allowing more time for what truly matters: deep customer empathy, stakeholder alignment, and long-term strategic thinking. We’re moving from being ‘doers’ to ‘editors-in-chief’ of our product’s narrative. But this also means we need to hone our critical thinking and strategic oversight like never before.
What’s your take on this? Are you leveraging AI tools in your daily workflow, and have you experienced this shift from creator to curator?
