It’s easy to get caught in the ‘feature factory’ trap. We have a well-groomed backlog, our velocity is consistent, and we’re shipping story points like clockwork. On the surface, it looks like peak productivity. But are we actually delivering value, or just delivering features?
This is a classic agile dilemma where we become so focused on output (the number of features shipped) that we lose sight of the outcomes (the actual impact on our customers and the business). True agility isn’t about moving faster; it’s about learning faster. If our sprints are just about clearing the next set of tickets without a tight feedback loop connecting our work to measurable results, we’re not being agile—we’re just running a highly-efficient delivery machine.
The real challenge for PMs is to shift the conversation from ‘what are we building next?’ to ‘what outcome are we trying to achieve?’. This means prioritizing work based on potential impact, defining clear success metrics before writing a single user story, and being brave enough to stop a feature mid-development if the evidence suggests it won’t move the needle.
How do you keep your team focused on outcomes over output when the pressure is on to just keep shipping?
