Beyond 'Glue Work': How Modern Product Managers Can Truly Demonstrate Their Value

Hey everyone,

Been noticing a recurring theme in conversations lately, both online and off: the increasing pressure on PMs to quantify their impact. With the tech economy tightening, leadership is scrutinizing every role, and ours is no exception. We’ve all done the ‘glue work’—facilitating meetings, aligning stakeholders, unblocking engineers—and we know it’s critical. But let’s be honest, it’s incredibly hard to slap a KPI on ‘prevented a cross-functional meltdown.’

The danger is that we get pigeonholed as ‘backlog administrators’ or ‘Jira ticket pushers,’ valuable for process but disconnected from strategy. Our true value isn’t just in managing the ‘how’ and ‘when,’ but in defining and evangelizing the ‘why.’ It’s about being the unwavering voice of the customer while deeply understanding the business model. It requires us to move beyond sprint planning and user story acceptance criteria to relentlessly connect our team’s work to tangible market outcomes and strategic goals. We must become master storytellers, using data not just to report progress, but to illustrate our direct influence on revenue, retention, and customer satisfaction.

So, how are you actively demonstrating your strategic value beyond just managing the backlog, and what metrics have you found most effective in communicating your impact to leadership?
