Beyond the Hype: Are We Becoming AI Orchestrators Instead of Product Managers?

There’s a lot of chatter about AI ‘replacing’ PMs, but I think that misses the point entirely. I’ve been seeing more discussions lately that frame our evolution in a much more interesting way: we’re shifting from being feature definers to AI orchestrators.

Think about it. Our traditional role has been to deeply understand user needs and translate them into detailed specs for our teams. Now, AI tools can generate user stories, draft PRDs, and even conduct preliminary market analysis in seconds. The temptation is to become a simple ‘pass-through’ for this generated output.

The real challenge, and where top-tier PMs will shine, is in becoming the strategic mind that directs these powerful new capabilities. Our role is becoming less about the ‘what’ and more about defining the ‘why’ and the ‘how.’ We are designing the systems, crafting the prompts, and curating the outputs to ensure they align with the core product vision and deliver genuine user value. We are the ultimate quality control, the ethical backstop, and the strategic editor-in-chief. This requires a pivot to systems thinking and a deeper focus on defining problems and constraints, not just solutions.

How are you personally moving beyond using AI for simple task automation and starting to use it as a strategic partner in your product discovery and definition process?
