We’re all seeing the flood of AI tools designed to make product managers more efficient—automating user story creation, summarizing feedback, and even drafting PRDs. While this tactical speed-up is useful, I believe it’s distracting us from the real, seismic shift happening to our roles.
The true impact of AI isn’t just about doing the old tasks faster; it’s about automating the tactical execution so that our value shifts almost entirely to strategic thinking. When anyone can generate a roadmap outline with a single prompt, the value is no longer in creating the artifact. The value is in the quality of the problem definition, the market insight, and the customer empathy that informs the prompt.
AI is pushing us out of the ‘backlog administrator’ role and forcing us to become true strategic leaders. We’re being freed from the tyranny of the ticket queue to focus on the things that matter most: deeply understanding the customer’s world, defining the right problems to solve, and crafting a compelling vision. It’s a move from managing features to shaping markets.
How are you actively shifting your focus from tactical execution to strategic leadership in response to AI?
