Everywhere you look, a new AI tool is promising to revolutionize product management. We’re told AI can write our user stories, summarize user interviews, and even draft entire PRDs in seconds. The efficiency gains are undeniable, and it’s tempting to see a future where the PM role becomes more about managing the AI than managing the product.
But I think this misses the point. These tools are automating the science of product management—the rote tasks, the data crunching. They aren’t touching the art. The real value of a great PM has always been in the uniquely human skills: deep empathy for a user’s struggle, navigating the delicate politics of stakeholder alignment, and making bold, intuitive leaps to define a winning strategy.
If anything, AI is making these human-centric skills more critical than ever. By offloading the busywork, AI should be freeing us up to spend more time with customers, to think more deeply about the market, and to facilitate the creative, cross-functional collaboration that truly drives innovation. We’re not being replaced; our roles are being elevated from tactical execution to strategic leadership. The question is whether we’re ready to embrace that shift.
How are you using AI in your workflow, and have you found it pushes you toward more strategic work or just adds more noise to your plate?
