There’s a lot of chatter about AI automating the product manager’s job away. But I’m starting to see a different, more interesting reality emerge. As AI tools get better at handling the tactical grunt work—summarizing user feedback, drafting PRDs, analyzing data sets—it’s not eliminating the PM role, but rather elevating it.
For years, we’ve talked about being the ‘voice of the user,’ but how much of our time was spent on coordination and documentation versus deep, empathetic thinking? AI is automating the ‘what,’ freeing us up to double down on the ‘why.’ The core of our job is shifting from project execution to genuine creative problem-solving, stakeholder diplomacy, and crafting a compelling vision that a machine can’t.
This means the skills that truly matter are becoming less about process and more about people. We’re being pushed to be better listeners, more persuasive storytellers, and more insightful strategists. The true value is no longer in managing a backlog, but in understanding the nuanced, unarticulated needs of our users and the market.
So, as AI handles more of the tactical tasks, what “human” skills are you consciously investing in to stay ahead and drive real impact?
