PLG vs. SLG: Finding Your Product's Growth Balance

The age-old debate between Product-Led Growth (PLG) and Sales-Led Growth (SLG) is evolving, not into an either/or scenario, but a crucial “how much of each” question. Many product teams are realizing that a purely PLG approach isn’t always optimal, especially for complex B2B solutions or enterprise markets. Conversely, ignoring product experience in a sales-heavy model can lead to churn.

As product managers, our role is shifting from solely optimizing the in-product experience for self-serve adoption to strategically integrating sales enablement and customer success touchpoints into the product journey. This means deeper collaboration with sales and marketing from discovery to post-purchase. It impacts how we prioritize features (e.g., self-service onboarding vs. robust admin tools for sales demos), design our user research (understanding both individual user needs and organizational buying processes), and even define our roadmaps to support both product-driven discovery and sales-assisted expansion.

The challenge lies in finding that sweet spot where the product itself drives initial value and adoption, while sales augments this with relationship building, complex solutioning, and expanding enterprise deals. It’s about empowering users with intuitive tools and equipping sales with the right narratives and product insights.
