There’s a lot of chatter about AI making the PM role obsolete. I think that’s missing the point entirely. The real change isn’t replacement; it’s augmentation, and it might be the key to finally breaking free from the “feature factory.”
For years, we’ve talked about escaping that endless cycle of shipping features without a clear connection to user outcomes. The tactical burden—writing detailed user stories, summarizing mountains of user feedback, and managing backlogs—often gets in the way of the deep strategic work. This is where AI is a game-changer. It’s becoming incredibly effective at automating these time-consuming tasks.
Instead of fearing obsolescence, what if we viewed AI as the ultimate tool to elevate our roles? By offloading the tactical execution to AI assistants, we can dedicate our focus to the “why.” This means more time spent with customers, more time wrestling with complex strategic questions, and more time aligning stakeholders around a powerful vision. The PMs who thrive will be the ones who master using AI to clear their plate for true leadership.
How are you and your team using AI to automate the tactical grind and double down on strategic, outcome-driven work?
