The 'First Draft' PM is Obsolete: Leveraging AI to Focus on What Truly Matters

We’ve all been there: buried under a mountain of documentation. Writing user stories, drafting PRDs, summarizing user feedback—it feels like half the job is just managing the paper trail. But what if we could automate the first draft of all of it?

Generative AI has crossed a threshold where it’s not just a novelty; it’s a legitimate co-pilot. It can instantly generate a competitive analysis, draft a full PRD from a few bullet points, or turn a messy interview transcript into concise, actionable insights. This shift automates the ‘first draft’ work that consumes so much of our time.

This isn’t a threat—it’s an opportunity to redefine our value. When the tactical grunt work is handled, we’re freed up to focus on the things that truly matter: deep conversations with customers, complex stakeholder negotiations, and long-term strategic vision. Our role evolves from being the ‘chief writer’ to the ‘chief editor and strategist,’ guiding the AI and applying critical human judgment. We get to spend less time typing and more time thinking.

But this requires a conscious shift in how we work and where we focus our energy.

So, here’s my question for the community: As AI takes over the ‘first draft,’ what specific high-leverage activities should product managers be doubling down on to prove their indispensable value?
