There’s a lot of chatter about AI ‘disrupting’ product management. Some see it as a threat, while others see it as the ultimate productivity hack. I believe the reality is more nuanced and far more interesting. AI tools are becoming incredibly proficient at tasks that once consumed our days: synthesizing user feedback, drafting user stories, and even running preliminary market analysis.
But this automation doesn’t make the PM role redundant; it fundamentally elevates it. Our value is shifting from being the ‘doer’ of these tasks to being the ‘thinker’ and ‘editor’ who guides the machine. The new core competencies aren’t about writing the perfect PRD from scratch, but about crafting the perfect prompt to generate it. It’s less about sifting through raw data and more about critically evaluating the insights an AI surfaces. We are becoming the strategic filter, the ethical backstop, and the human voice of the customer that an LLM can’t replicate. The most effective PMs will be those who master the art of leveraging AI as a junior partner, freeing up their own cognitive resources for what truly matters: deep strategic thinking and genuine user empathy.
So, where have you seen AI create the most leverage in your product workflow, and what new skills do you think are becoming non-negotiable for PMs in this new era?
