We’re all seeing the flood of AI tools that claim to automate classic PM tasks. From summarizing user interview transcripts in seconds to drafting full PRDs and user stories from a simple prompt, the tactical parts of our job are being transformed.
Some view this as a threat, a devaluing of the skills we’ve spent years honing. I see it differently. I believe we’re entering the era of the ‘AI-Augmented PM,’ where our core value shifts decisively from execution to strategy and vision.
When AI can handle the ‘what’ and the ‘how’ (drafting specs, analyzing data sets), it frees us up to focus entirely on the ‘why.’ Our role becomes less about managing backlogs and more about deep market insight, evangelizing a compelling product vision, fostering genuine cross-functional collaboration, and exercising human-centric judgment. The PMs who thrive will be those who master AI as a strategic partner, not just a productivity tool, allowing them to operate at a much higher strategic altitude.
How are you personally adapting your focus and skills to stay ahead of this curve?
