The Soul of a Product Manager: Are We Finally Escaping the Feature Factory Trap?

We’ve all been there. The roadmap is packed, the sprints are full, and leadership is asking for status updates on a dozen different features. We’re shipping constantly, but are we actually making a difference? This is the classic ‘feature factory’ dilemma, and despite years of talking about being ‘outcome-driven,’ it feels like many of us are still stuck on the assembly line.

The shift from measuring success by output (features shipped) to outcomes (did we increase retention? did we improve user satisfaction?) is the single most important transition a product team can make. It’s the difference between being a project manager and a true product leader. When teams are aligned around a common goal—not just a list of features—they become more creative, autonomous, and ultimately, more impactful.

But let’s be honest: the pressure from stakeholders for predictability is immense. Sales needs to know what’s coming next quarter, and executives want to see velocity. It’s a constant battle to reframe the conversation from ‘When will it be done?’ to ‘What problem are we trying to solve and how will we measure success?’

So, how are you navigating this in your organization? Are you successfully shifting the focus to outcomes, or is the feature factory still running at full steam?
